The Irvine Club name originated in honour of Mr John Taylor “Jock” Irvine. Jock Irvine captured our imagination when he held the position of 12th man for the Australian cricket team in every Test in their tour of India in the cricket season of 1969/70. The main emphasis on Jock Irvine was that he, like most of us who are currently in our 30’s (at the date of formation), has aspirations and ambitions that we have not quite fulfilled, despite the tall tales we may otherwise tell. Hence, the Irvine Club recognises this shortfall but at least provides us all with the chance to discuss (and embellish) those tall tales. The Latin phrase ‘dum pleb fre eo’, which roughly translates to ‘for those who were almost there’, has been adopted as the moniker that best reflects the Irvine Club, a group of sporting hopefuls brought together by the love of sport, enjoying a beverage, fine food, good humour, catching up with some old mates and certainly meeting a few new ones as well.
At the inaugural function held at the Kelvin Club we started with 70 guests and grew to 140 and 210 at the Irvine Lunches Two and Three. 292 guests attended the most recent function in November 2006.
Although not touted purely as a networking function, the Irvine Club certainly promotes the idea of supporting each other both personally and professionally.
The Irvine Club is Not for Profit and to date has been proud to support the following charities to date:-
